Fedelia to Captain Nigeria 7s Squad

Fedelia Angeles (Omoghan) Named to Nigeria 7s All African Games Roster
March 20, 2024

“I have played at the highest level in many competitions, but this one just feels different.”

– Fedelia Angeles

Fedelia Nyiekaa Angeles (Omoghan) is no stranger to elite rugby, having played provincially and nationally for several rugby codes in Canada. However, this weekend they will participate in a tournament that is different to the rest. Joining the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF), Fedelia will lead the Lady Stallions Nigeria 7s roster in the 13th All African Games, Accra 2023. “I get goosebumps thinking about what it will feel like to put on the Nigerian jersey for the first time. I know there will be a lot of emotion” says Omoghan, debuting for Team Nigeria.

The 7s team is comprised of nine home-based and six foreign-based athletes who are scheduled to play in the rugby event from March 20th to March 21st, 2024 at the recently built University of Ghana Rugby Stadium. Playing a pivotal role in the recruitment and makings of the recently announced squad, Fedelia reflects on the “last 5 years, the Nigerian rugby union has been working hard, and fighting to get our women’s team to be a part of international competition. We finally have our shot to prove ourselves as a team to be reckoned with. We want to make a statement at the African Games. Nigerian women’s rugby is here to stay and we are going for gold!”

The inspiring words echo as the Scarborough Aces athlete passionately captains the tour set to kick off on March 20th. Fedelia talks about what playing for Team Nigeria means to them, expressing “I get to represent my heritage and my family. My mother immigrated to Canada from Nigeria in 1991 in search for a better life. Thanks to my mother who has always instilled that hard-working Nigerian spirit in her children, I am the athlete I am today”.

In Rugby Union, the star-athlete has continued to shine after giving birth to their third child. Angeles recently won the title of 2024 Female Club Player of the Year for Rugby Ontario, representing their union club Scarborough RFC. Their teammates are cheering loudly from home in Ontario, Canada especially long-time high school friend and club rugby teammate Sab McDaid who says, “the dictionary defines superlative as: of the highest kind, quality, or order, surpassing all else, or others. Supreme. I define it as Fedelia. As a teammate, as a leader, as a woman, mother, and as a friend, she is of the highest kind, quality, and order. Supreme”.

We are all extremely proud of your continued successes, Feds!
